On offer is this antique English sterling silver trophy loving cup bearing the hallmarks  for London 1899 and the makers mark of Carrington and Company .  The trophy loving cup  is of  good  size and weight . The overall height is 9  " , the diameters are ,  base , 4.9  " , cup top 5.6  " and the handle width is 8.7  " . The  weight is 769  grams , 24.73 troy ounces .
This is a truely beautiful trophy cup , made with great skill to a complex design. The cup body has a flared top with a repousse band of spiled acanthus leaves just below the rim.
There is a repousse cartouche to the middle of each side of the cup body , one inscribed , the other with a most remarkable repousse scene showing a charging soldier , his sword outstretched , on the point of running a static target through. Watching him are two soldiers in the forground . Behind him is a tiered grandstand full of spectators. In the background is another mounted soldier waiting his turn at running down the target.
The inscription to the front cartouche  reads :
ROYAL MILITARY TOURNAMENT    /   YEOMANRY BRIGADE TOURNAMENT    /   7TH YEOMANRY BRIGADE   /   WON BY   /   CORPORAL W.T. NICHOLLS.
The handles are a delight ! They are robust and take the form of a smooth surface above and below, beaded decoration down the sides and a spread fixing to the lower part of the cup body. The lower part of the cup body has vertical gadrooning sumounted by foliar swags . In the centre of each side , below the upper curve of the swags , hangs a vacant roundel ringed by a laurel wreath. Under the handles , at the uppermost point of the swag  curve are a pair of magnificent horses heads . The stem is short and  leads down to a spread base with a decorative band of stippled ground with repousse foliage running around the base.  The whole effect is quite stunning !  A most remarkable feat of design and superb workmanship , which will grace any display of military or equine memorabilia .
The whole is in EXCELLENT CONDITION and is beautifully polished ready to go on display.
For your guidance , I use the words " EXCELLENT CONDITION " only if it is ........., " GOOD CONDITION " to indicate that there are no serious condition problems , but that there may be surface blemishes such as light discolouration , minor dings , dents or scratches commensurate with the age of the piece.............. I use the words " REASONABLE CONDITION " to indicate that there are blemishes and dings ,dents, creases , scratches , ripples etc . Under this condition category I will always qualify such defects , but please ask if you want any clarification of damages to any given piece.
