On offer is this superb antique English  sterling silver and parcel gilt  trophy vase bearing the hallmarks  for   Sheffield 1864  and the makers mark of  Roberts and Briggs  .    The trophy vase is of good size and  weight .  The overall height is  12.8 " , the diameters are , base , 4.5   " , cup top  4.25  " and the handle width is  7.75  " . The weight is 1220  grams , 39.23   troy ounces.
The vase is in pure Greek revival form, copying an antique two handled hydria and the decoration, with the exception of the horse-racing scenes follows the rules of classical Greek ornament.
The handles are decorated with wave and dot decoration; the foot with framed anthemiums with lotus in between, the lower body is engraved with flutes above which is a band of Vitruvian scrolls surmounted by lotus flowers.   Above the equestrian scenes is a band of egg and dart, then a wide band of scrolling linked vines.   The neck has linked geometric panels containing stylised palmettes and to the rim is applied a band of traditional egg and dart wire.
The decoration is all hand-engraved to the very first standard and the surface has a matt finish.
What really makes this vase exeptional is the subject of the engraved scenes . The back of the vase shows two race horse , their jockeys stretching them towards the finishing post . A normal racing scene , beautifully executed by the unknown Victorian engraver. By the same hand , on the front of the vase , is the most interesting scene .
The owner , resplendent in top hat and tailcoat , stands in the centre , holding the reins of the standing horse to his left , its jockey sitting quietly with whip raised . On the right of the owner  stands a groom with his back to us, a blanket over his right arm.  On the left of the groom , just arriving as evident by the raised front and hind legs , is another horse with jockey up .
The interesting thing about this jockey is that you can clearly make out that she is riding astride the horse . There is no doubt that it is a lady jockey , there is no doubt that she is riding astride. I am fairly certain that this is most likely to be one of the earliest depictions of a lady riding astride  , and a lady jockey at that. Either she is a jockey or she is a lady dressed in colours.
However you interpret this image , it remains an excellent and  most exquisite depiction of people and horses by a master engraver in 1864, on an excellent vase , all commissioned by the proud owner.
I recently had an interesting conversation with a couple who breed event horses. They looked at this vase and came up with an interesting suggestion. They considered it highly likely that  yes , the man in the middle was the owner , and that the two jockeys could easily have been his adult children having just had or about to have , a race between each other.  Who knows ? One thing is for certain and that is that there is no record anywhere of a lady jockey in silks in 1864 . I have had a researcher check for me with all the horse racing world here in England and there is no mention anywhere of  a lady jockey astride a horse at that time. So , the mystery is still a mystery !
Apart from three minor dings to the sides of the handles , t
he whole is in EXCELLENT CONDITION and is beautifully polished ready to go on display.
For your guidance , I use the words " EXCELLENT CONDITION " only if it is ........., " GOOD CONDITION " to indicate that there are no serious condition problems , but that there may be surface blemishes such as light discolouration , minor dings , dents or scratches commensurate with the age of the piece.............. I use the words " REASONABLE CONDITION " to indicate that there are blemishes and dings ,dents, creases , scratches , ripples etc . Under this condition category I will always qualify such defects , but please ask if you want any clarification of damages to any given piece.
