Antique mid-19th century French sterling silver egg cup and spoon breakfast set. Richly decorated with gold vermeil finish. The egg cup is features ornate bands and elegant styling, intricately patterned with finely detailed raised relief of grapes, leaves, scrolling foliage and rocailles. The spoon handle enhanced with scrolling and floral motifs framing a blank cartouche with a delightful cherub or angle detail. Both pieces are hallmarked with the post-1838 French Minerve or Minerva 1st standard mark, which guaranteed the finest quality French sterling silver of .950/1000 purity (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for sterling). Maker's mark for silversmith Pierre-Hippolyte Fournerot, active from 1833-1857 at 37 rue Michel-le-Comte in Paris. Both pieces are in overall very good condition with beautiful vermeil finish intact. Egg cup stands 2 3/4" height with a 1 3/4" diameter opening. Spoon is 4 5/8" length. Total silver weight: 44.2 grams. All housed in an old presentation box with red satin lining the fitted interior, likely original. The box shows wear commensurate with age and use, measures 5 3/8" x 3 1/4" x 2 1/8" height.
