Atwater KentModel 20C (Compact) Radio.
Original Finish.
Up for bids is a nice example of the Atwater Kent radio model 20C (Compact).
The AK 20 (Big Box) and AK 20C are considered by most AK radio collectors as the best examples of early Atwater Kent table model receivers.
The AK 20C had it all. A painted heavy duty steel panel front enclosed in a hand rubbed, solid wood mahogany cabinet.
Atwater Kent liked the idea that smaller was better. Even while the AK 20 "Big Box" was selling like crazy, he had his engineers design a smaller version of the set.
That smaller version became the AK 20C and production started in March 1925 and was first advertised nationally in June of that year.
Most of the original parts from the Big Box 20 were incorporated into the AK 20C even though it was six inches shorter. This not only provided for a smaller radio but more than likely also cut down on production costs.
This set is in good physical condition. The hand-rubbed cabinet
finish is in good shape with a few areas of wear commensurate with age. It could certainly use a good buffing to bring out the cabinet shine. The steel faceplate has its original finish and is in outstanding shape with minimal wear. The factory inspection tag is partially missing.
All dials/controls function as they should. The battery cables are intact but frayed. Two of the feet are missing on the bottom
As this is a battery powered radio, requiring the use of an external speaker, a regulated power supply and a working set of tubes, it is untested. I don't have the ability to test the unit. As per the pictures, this is sold without tubes. Please review pictures for condition. All you see is all you get.

Dimensions of this radio are approximately 6 1/2 inches tall, 20 inches wide & 6 1/2 inches deep.
This AK 20C presents itself quite well. It's a radio the winning bidder will certainly appreciate and enjoy.
The Atwater Kent model 20C should also be considered a credit to 1920's craftsmanship and ingenuity. It can also be an excellent history lesson for the entrepreneur of today and tomorrow. Atwater Kent had a popular mousetrap and still insisted on building a better mousetrap and did so successfully....without sacrificing quality.
