Description

This is an undated booklet titled The Rock of Ages (the mining of granite) by Boutwell, Milne & Varnum Co. of Montpelier, Vermont.  The book measures 6" x 9" with 24 pages.
James Meade Boutwell was born on May 16, 1855, in Montpelier, Vermont, the son of Harry and Lucy Meade Boutwell. He married Jennie (Genevieve) Rumsey, daughter of Charles Rumsey and Helen Chamberlin of Wells River, Vermont, on April 29, 1880. James Boutwell began working when he was sixteen years old as a machinist apprentice. He eventually became part owner of Boutwell, Milne and Varnum, a granite company in Barre, Vermont, now known as Rock of Ages. He later became president of Montpelier National Bank and was elected Mayor of Montpelier serving four terms. James and Jennie Boutwell did not have any children. James Boutwell died on July 1, 1929, and Jennie Boutwell died in 1943. Most of Boutwell’s estate was left in a trust fund to Jennie’s niece, Maizie Rumsey, who lived with the Boutwells for a period of time.
