If you’re a collector of early radio-phonographs like I am, you know one of the most heartbreaking experiences of the hobby is coming across a beautiful, rare specimen and excitedly raising the lid, only to discover that the phonograph is missing – or, worse, has been replaced by a later turntable unit that can play LP’s and 45’s in addition to 78’s. You’d love to own the unit, but you can’t bear the thought of keeping it as it is, and you strongly suspect you’ll never be able to find a matching original phonograph to restore it back to its former glory.
Every once in a while, though, you get really lucky.
If you own a 1929 Victor model R-15 radio-phonograph – minus the original phonograph – and have been hoping against hope you might someday find an original phonograph to replace the one that was excised from it decades ago…well, this is your lucky day. If you own an R-15, you know it’s a beautiful, and rare, repwood console – a 7-tube set which boasted a pair of 45 output tubes – that Victor produced just before it was bought up by RCA. Indeed, the flared tone-arm, though it bears a large “V” and Victor’s trademark, was clearly made by RCA, as was the magnetic horseshoe pickup. Everything is present here, from the turntable to the electric motor to needle cups to the lovely carved wood knobs! The motor board measures 17.5”w x 15.5”d, and should fit other concurrent models, as well. If you’ve been looking for one of these, you know this is a once-in-a-lifetime find.
