Hand Crafted Skin-on-Frame 16-Foot Greenland Kayak withPaddle
This is a handmade skin-on-frame kayak in the tradition ofthe Greenland Inuit. Other than some glue on the back of the coaming, there areno nails, glue, or other modern fasteners in this kayak. It is held togetherwith wooden pegs, artificial sinew, and dental floss (for stitching thecanvas). The top of the frame is made from fir and the ribs and coaming aremade from oak. Given that seal skins aren’t readily available, it is coveredwith number 10 canvas duck, which weighs 14.75 oz/sq yd. and is not to beconfused with the 10 oz/sq yd. canvas sold as drop cloths. The skin is primedand painted with Safety Blue Rust-Oleum, and a half-gallon comes with the kayakfor touch-up. The paddle is also handmade, of fir.
