    Description

For your consideration is a fine sterling silver Presentation Cup presented to Civil War Col Thomas Chamberlin. This piece was Made by J.E Caldwell, Philadelphia, circa 1905. Nice form with twin scrolling form handles. Very interesting engraving: “In grateful recognition of the Historic Perpetuation of the Memory of Gallant Deeds which he shared as well as chronicled.” On the reverse side engraved: “Presented to Col Thomas Chamberlin by his Comrades of the 150th Regiment Penna. Vols. Oct. 25th.. 1895.”. Chamberlin was a first Major (and later a Lieutenant Colonial) for the 150th Pa Volunteers when they held off a overwhelming force of Confederate soldiers near McPherson’s Farm in Gettysburg July 1, 1863. Chamberlin was severely wounded, but lived to chronicle and give speeches about the exploits of the 150th regiment. In 1905 Chamberlin had published what is considered one of the best regimental histories ever written by a veteran “History of the one hundred and fiftieth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers”. This Cup was made in Philadelphia, where Chamberlin resided after the war until him death in 1917. I purchased it at a estate sale right outside of Philadelphia. It was most likely given to him during one of his presentations about the 150th Pa Volunteers. This Piece is in good age appropriate condition - only issues being there are a few dings around the base (see photo’s #10,11,12). All in all good condition. I leave the finer polishing of this Piece to the discretion of the future Buyer. Marked: “J.E.CALDWELL & Co STERLING 1”. Weight: 254.8 Grams. Height: 4 Inches. Width: 7 1/2 Inches. Diameter: 4 1/8 Inches. Thank you for looking and good luck!
